Top Picks From Canada Reads 2024 Shortlist

2024 is here, and if you are a Canadian book lover, you know exactly what that means. Canada Reads in back for its 23rd annual Battle of the Books! The theme for this year is: One Book To Carry Us Forward. 

The shortlist has been released, and debates will take place from March 4-7. Until then, I’ve picked three of my favorites to share with you today. You can also check out the 2024 Longlist for more incredible Canadian books to check out.

Bad Cree by Jessica Johns

Genre: Paranormal Horror

Description: Mackenzie is haunted by nightmares about the untimely death of her sister Sabrina. She is overcome by guilt while the lines between reality and her nightmares blur. Soon, crows start to follow her and she receives threatening text messages from someone claiming to be her sister. 

Looking for an escape, she flees to her family home. But what she finds may be even more terrifying. 

The Future by Catherine Leroux

Genre: Dystopian Fiction, Science Fiction

Description: Have you ever thought about what Detroit would be like if the French never surrendered the city to the U.S? Even if you haven’t, you should give this book a read. 

Gloria arrives in the city trying to find out about her missing granddaughters. Detroit residents deal with racism, poverty, and pollution. However, Gloria finds a group of abandoned children who have created their own society. 

Meet Me At The Lake by Carley Fortune

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Fiction

Description: This is not your everyday romance novel. This book explores how small, random events can change the course of your life.
