Carley Fortune’s Meet Me at the Lake Features In Canada Reads Debates
The Canada Reads debates are currently underway, and this year is special. In all 22 years of Canada Reads debates, a romance novel has never made the cut – until now.
This year, the Canada Reads theme is: One book to carry us forward.
Maybe people just don’t generally take the romance genre seriously. However, this year, Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune made it into the 2024 Canada Reads shortlist.
Meet Me at the Lake tells the story of a whirlwind romance between strangers Fern and Will in Toronto over 24 hours. The two make a pact to meet one year later, but Will never shows up. 10 years on, Fern reluctantly runs her mother’s lakeside resort. Then one day, Will shows up again, but he’s hiding something.
Mirian Njoh, model and fashion influencer, proudly champions the book in this year’s debates. She has been particularly passionate about championing a romance novel. Here is what she had to say about it:
“This is a book about interpersonal relationships. It’s about human connection, human experience. It is something that you can automatically connect with. You don’t have to favor a specific genre to be able to connect with this.”
Miriam Njoh
Njoh goes on to say how the romance genre is one of the most popular genres. She says:
“If we’re talking about opening up people to reading, romance is the way to go and I think that [Meet Me at the Lake is] a beautiful story and and it’s very gripping.”
